The Canon Foundation in Europe offers grants for individuals to carry out research in Europe or Japan. Europeans (including the Balkan and Baltic countries, Israel, Turkey and UK) are expected to carry out their research in JAPAN whilst Japanese are expected to carry out their research in EUROPE.

We support applications in all research fields.

Applicants should have already obtained their last academic degree within the last 10 years of applying to us, regardless of whether it is a Master’s degree or a PhD. Extensions to the 10 year limit will be considered for justified causes (for example maternity/paternity leave, medical exemptions, military service etc.)

Applicants are free to choose their host institution in Japan or Europe and do not need to be enrolled or employed at the time of applying.

Priority is given to applicants going to Europe and Japan for the first time.

A successful applicant can expect to receive up to 30,000 Euros per year pro rata.

The minimum period is 3 months to maximum 12 months.

The start date of the research can be anytime from 1 January up to 1 December.

Grants are established at the discretion of the Foundation and based upon the nature of the research project. Because the form has been designed for applicants from the commercial, governmental and academic worlds, parts of the form may be more or less relevant.

Candidates should be aware that it is our policy NOT to award Fellowships to people who are already in possession of a concurrent research grant aid from another Foundation authority.
