Kôdô, the art of fragrance in Japan

In Japan, the art of perfume and fragrance has its origins in Buddhism, with which introduced incense shortly before the Heian era, and reached its apogee during the Edo era. Kôdô is the way of incense, an art unique in the world, which consists in the appreciation and of rare aromatic woods. This art has given rise to a highly codified a highly codified ritual, with specific tools and the use of woods more precious than gold. It puts the olfactory sagacity of the ceremony’s participants, but also offers unique and intense emotions as they listen to these precious fragrances.
This ancestral practice finds analogies with our classical art of perfumery, especially with regard to the categorical approach to scents and olfactory memory. In fact, Japanese incense is currently being westernized by the addition of fragrances fragrances typical of our own.
